Ferry service between Richmond and Swan Island is set to resume Saturday, four years after it was suspended by the U.S. Coast Guard over safety and inspection concerns.

State officials are expected to make the announcement Thursday at Swan Island Pier in Richmond. The free ferry will operate on weekends through early September.

The ferry had connected Richmond to Swan Island for decades before service was halted in 2022. Since then, several private alternatives have been tried with mixed success.

State Rep. Sally Cluchey, who helped lead efforts to restore the service, and Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife officials will take part in Thursday’s announcement.

Swan Island, part of the Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area, features seven miles of hiking trails, 10 Adirondack lean-to campsites, and is a popular destination for wildlife viewing along the Atlantic Flyway.
