After nearly 39 years, Maine State Police have made an arrest in the 1987 homicide of Alice Hawkes, closing a long-standing cold case.
On Friday, May 8, detectives from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit–Unsolved and Major Crimes Unit–South arrested 63-year-old Stephen Bouchard of Winslow on a charge of murder. Bouchard, who was Alice Hawkes’ live-in boyfriend at the time of her death, was taken into custody without incident.
Hawkes’ body was discovered on Oct. 4, 1987, in the Westbrook apartment she shared with Bouchard. Her death was quickly ruled a homicide. State Police and Westbrook Police conducted an extensive investigation at the time, but the case eventually went cold.
Detectives periodically reviewed the case over the decades. In 2025, the Major Crimes Unit–Unsolved launched a full reinvestigation, which led the Maine Attorney General’s Office to present the case to a Cumberland County Grand Jury. The grand jury returned a Murder indictment against Bouchard on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
Authorities have not released additional details about the evidence that led to the arrest or the circumstances surrounding Hawkes’ death.
Anyone with information related to the death of Alice Hawkes is asked to contact the State Police Major Crimes Unit at (207) 657-5710.
The investigation remains active.
