Authorities are investigating an act of arson at the historic Masonic Temple in Bath after an American flag hanging from the building was intentionally burned on Tuesday morning.
The Maine Office of State Fire Marshal, working alongside the Bath Police Department and Bath Fire Department, responded to the Masonic Temple at 958 Washington Street shortly after 10am on June 2, following the discovery of the burned flag. Investigators determined the fire was deliberately set, officially classifying the incident as arson.
In a notable twist, officials later discovered that an unknown individual placed a new American flag on the fence in front of the building sometime after the fire occurred. The Office of State Fire Marshal confirmed that no members or representatives of the Masonic Temple were responsible for replacing the flag.
Investigators are now appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the person who placed the replacement flag, as that individual may possess critical information related to the arson.
