The Lewiston Police Department unveiled details of an operation that uncovered an illicit massage parlor on Sabattus Street, operated by Richard Qiu of Brooklyn, NY. The investigation, which began in March 2024, not only highlighted the dark underbelly of what might have seemed like a legitimate business but also shone a light on the broader issue of human trafficking in Maine.

Qiu, who has been linked to several massage parlors across the state, found himself at the center of a storm when Lewiston police executed two search warrants at his establishment. What they discovered went beyond mere regulatory violations; it pointed towards a network involved in sex trafficking. Among the items seized were video recording equipment, which raised questions about surveillance or perhaps more sinister uses, condoms, and a significant sum of over $12,000, believed to be proceeds from illicit activities.

The most alarming aspect of this case, however, was the identification of two individuals suspected to be victims of human trafficking. This revelation has not only put Qiu in the legal crosshairs but has also sparked a broader conversation about the prevalence of human trafficking under the guise of wellness services in Maine.
