Authorities from multiple law enforcement agencies apprehended five suspects, including four juveniles and one adult, following a pair of early-morning burglaries and a dramatic pursuit that ended in a crash in Waterville on Monday, May 18.
According to a press release from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began at approximately 4:48am, when deputies responded to a reported burglary at a business in Trenton. After leaving the scene, the suspects traveled to Ellsworth, where they allegedly burglarized a second business. The Ellsworth Police Department is investigating that incident.
As the suspects headed back toward Trenton, Deputy Anthony Jones spotted their vehicle on Oak Point Road and followed it onto Bar Harbor Road, where he initiated a traffic stop. With the assistance of Lt. Brian Archer and a Bar Harbor Police Officer, officers attempted to conduct a felony stop. However, the vehicle fled, leading to a brief pursuit that was quickly terminated due to safety concerns during the morning commute.
Later in the day, the suspect vehicle was located in Waldo County. It failed to stop for multiple law enforcement agencies before ultimately crashing in the city of Waterville. All occupants were taken into custody without further incident.
The adult suspect was identified as 18-year-old Larando Sweeting of Lewiston. He faces charges of:
- Class C Burglary
- Class C Aggravated Criminal Mischief
- Class C Theft by Unauthorized Taking or Transfer
The four juvenile males were also charged in connection with the investigation. Due to their age, no additional information about the juveniles is being released.
No injuries were reported in the crash or during the arrests.
