Maine drivers can now show off their favorite New England teams while paying tolls, according to a release from the Maine Turnpike Authority.
The Maine Turnpike Authority has launched $20 E-ZPass sticker tags featuring the Portland Sea Dogs, Boston Red Sox and Portland Hearts of Pine.
The smaller tags use passive RFID technology, require no battery and use less plastic than traditional hardcase transponders. They also stick directly to a vehicle’s windshield and are automatically deactivated if removed, making them harder to transfer or use without authorization.
Drivers can also buy a basic sticker tag for $5, the cheapest E-ZPass option offered by the Turnpike Authority. Traditional hardcase transponders remain available for $15.
The new sports tags were tested during a three-month pilot program before being released.
There’s also a community benefit: all proceeds from Hearts of Pine tags will go to the Hearts of Pine Foundation, which uses soccer programs and community partnerships to support young people across Maine.
The Turnpike Authority says more team partnerships are planned, including a Maine Mariners hockey tag.
MTA also launched a new Maine E-ZPass mobile app this week. Android users can use it to manage accounts, check balances, add funds and purchase sticker tags. An iPhone version is expected soon.
The new sticker tags are optional, and drivers do not need to replace their existing E-ZPass transponders. They are available online, through the app, or at the E-ZPass customer service office on Congress Street in Portland.
