The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent rise in phone scams involving fake arrest warrants and bail payments.

Authorities say callers are posing as law enforcement officers and telling victims they have an outstanding warrant. The scammers then demand money to prevent an arrest.

In another version of the scam, callers target relatives of people who are incarcerated, promising to lower bail or secure their release in exchange for payment.

The sheriff’s office says it will never demand or collect payment over the phone and urges residents to be cautious of suspicious calls.
