Thousands of low-income Maine households will soon receive automatic discounts on their monthly electric bills under a $40 million state assistance program announced by Gov. Janet Mills.

According to a Central Maine News story, eligible Central Maine Power customers could save 25% to 81% on their bills, while Versant customers could receive discounts of 17% to 83%.

Households earning no more than 150% of federal poverty guidelines qualify. Those whose eligibility is confirmed through programs such as SNAP, MaineCare or the federal Home Energy Assistance Program may be enrolled automatically.

People who aren’t already participating in a qualifying state assistance program can apply for the Low Income Assistance Program through the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.

The state estimates about 23,000 additional households qualify but aren’t enrolled. Unlike the previous program, which provided one-time payments, the new assistance offers monthly discounts expected to begin appearing on November bills.
