Utz Quality Foods, LLC, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, Inc., has issued a voluntary recall of specific limited varieties of Zapp’s® and Dirty® potato chips due to a possible salmonella contamination in a seasoning ingredient.
The recall was initiated after Utz was notified that a seasoning containing dry milk powder, sourced from California Dairies, Inc. and supplied by a third-party vendor, may contain Salmonella. Although the affected seasoning batches tested negative for the bacteria prior to use, the company is proceeding with the recall out of an abundance of caution.
No illnesses have been reported to Utz in connection with these products. The recall is being conducted based on the ingredient supplier’s own recall.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, frail individuals, or those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream, leading to more severe conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.
The recall is limited to specific batches of the following products sold at retail stores nationwide. No other Utz products are included. Consumers should check packaging for UPC codes, best-by dates, and batch codes. Examples of recalled items include:
- Various sizes of Zapp’s® Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips
- Zapp’s® Big Cheezy Potato Chips (select sizes)
- Zapp’s® Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips
- Dirty® Salt & Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream & Onion Potato Chips
