Winter Driving Safety Tips for Maine Roads
Before You Go
- Check the weather forecast and road conditions; Use resources like MaineDOT, 511, or local news before heading out.
- Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle — windows, mirrors, roof, lights, and license plates.
- Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid fuel line freeze-up.
- Charge your phone and bring a car charger or power bank.
- Pack an emergency car kit including: blanket, water, snacks, flashlight and batteries, ice scraper and small shovel, sand, salt, or kitty litter (for traction), jumper cables, first aid kit.
On the Road
- Slow down — speed limits are for ideal conditions, not icy ones.
- Increase your following distance (at least 5–6 seconds) to allow extra stopping time.
- Avoid sudden braking, accelerating, or sharp turns — drive smoothly.
- Don’t use cruise control on slippery or icy roads.
- Use headlights during snow, sleet, or low visibility — it helps you see and be seen.
If You Start to Slide
- Stay calm and don’t slam the brakes.
- Steer gently in the direction you want to go.
- Take your foot off the gas and let the vehicle slow naturally.
If You Get Stuck or Stranded
- Stay with your vehicle — it’s safer and easier to locate.
- Run the engine occasionally for warmth, but crack a window and clear the exhaust pipe to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Call for help and alert someone to your location.
