A woman suffered critical injuries after being struck by a car driven by a child younger than 10 in Oakland, California, on Thursday morning, police said.
The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. near 35th and Mangels avenues. Investigators said the child was driving a Toyota Camry with another child under 10 as a passenger when the vehicle collided with another car, went out of control, and hit the woman as she walked her dog in a crosswalk. The car then jumped the curb and crashed into a fence.
The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Both children were also hospitalized with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
Police said the dog was not injured. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the crash, and the children’s parents are cooperating with the investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be confirmed factors.
