The Maine Republican Party says their headquarters in Augusta has received an envelope in the mail with an unidentifiable white powder.
The National Guard set up for a hazmat investigation to determine what the substance is.
Statement for Chairman Jim Deyermond:
Out of an abundance of caution, we contacted emergency services, where we were advised to evacuate. No one is displaying ill symptoms at this time. These are crazy times, and we must continue to remain diligent for our own and others’ safety. This will not impact the functions or dedication of the Maine Republican Party to elect Republicans and work for a better tomorrow. It’s frustrating to be interrupted and have potential extreme ill-intent impacting our operations and staff. The rhetoric and violence needs to be toned down before more people get hurt. We are thankful no one was harmed today.

Regardless of what substance is determined to be in that envelope – whether the goal was intimidation or physical harm – this is a disgusting act of political violence against Maine’s Republican Party. Democrats continue to raise the temperature and demonize our party to gain political points. This and other worse acts of political violence are the direct result. Janet Mills should condemn this assault on Maine GOP immediately or else remain complicit in violence done in her party’s name.
